This zoo is known for its monkey collection, fossas and its whale collection (once having 5 species at the same time). The zoo also has a good breeding groupe of clouded leopards and the Koala bears

There are several daily dolphin shows and other feeding shows, for the time please ask at the till station. Kids will love the petting zoo.

  • 1934: Opening of the Duisburg Zoo on Kaiserberg on an area of ​​4 ha. The first Director is Dr. Eduard Wiedemann
  • 1935: Opening of the first aquarium, the first monkey house as a semi circular building (later called Raritätenkabinett), the zoo restaurant and the Forest Tavern

  • 1960: Opening of the tiger enclosure and the llama enclosure (today alpacas)
  • 1961: Opening of the forest pond with flamingos
  • 1962: Opening of Äquatoriums , as at the time the largest monkey house in the world
  • 1963: Piranhas breed for the first time. Arrival of Arab stallion Kaisoon as a gift from Egypt. Beginning of the breeding of Arabians in the Duisburg Zoo

  • 1965: Opening of the first dolphinarium in Germany with four bottlenose dolphins

  • 1976: Clouded leopards breed for the first time at the zoo. Opening of the bald ibis aviary as a donation of Thyssen AG
  • 1977: Tasmanian devils breed for the first time in Germany at the zoo.
  • 1978: For the first time Commerson's dolphin at the zoo in Duisburg. Bottlenose dolphins breed for the first time in Germany at the zoo.
  • 1979: Red river hog breed for the first time in Germany at the zoo.
  • 1980: Fossa breed for the first time in Germany at the zoo.
  • 1982: Opening the Zoo School, the new Kodiak bear enclosure and todays Owl aviarie as a gift of Thyssen AG
  • 1984: Opening the anteater enclosure and  the extended giant otters enclosure as a gift of the Zoo Society
  • 1986: Opening of the Great carnivore house
  • 1987: Hog badgerbreed for the first time in Germany at the zoo
  • 1988: Opening of the Chinese Garden as a gift from its sister city of Wuhan
  • 1989: Opening of the bird grove as an walk in aviaries tract
  • 1990: Opening of racoon enclosure as a gift of the Zoo Society. Opening of the Run-and-Fun-enclosure for the African wild dogs
  • 1994: New zoo director Dipl. -Biol. Reinhard Frese
  • 1995: Koala bear breed for the first time in Europe at the zoo. Opening of the third dolphinarium and of the large children's playground as a gift Sparkasse Duisburg
  • 1996: Opening of the Arctic Fox eclosure
  • 1997: Opening of the new zoo landscape bridge. Transformation of the old house for large mammals in to the Elephant House
  • 1999: Construction of noise barriers along the highway. Opening of the White Stork enclosure
  • 2000: Opening of the fossa enclosure as a gift of the Zoo Society. Opening of the giraffe house, the main entrance and the tree kangaroo house
  • 2001: Opening the walk-in enclosure for ring-tailed lemurs, the pygmy hippo house and the wolverine enclosure. Malagasy giant rat breed for the first time in Germany at the zoo.
  • 2002: Opening of the gorilla enclosure. Expansion of the elephant enclosure with a separate enclosure for a Bull. Opening of the zoo school building
  • 2003: Opening of  enclosures for coati Oriental small-clawed otters
  • 2004: Closure of the dilapidated Walarium. The last beluga whale FERDINAND and the last Commerson's dolphin YOGI go to SeaWorld San Diego in the U.S.A.

  • 2006: Opening of the new east entrance of the Äquatoriums and the king colobus enclosure as a gift of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG

  • 2008: Opening the meerkat  enclosure and the extention of the giant otters enclosure as a gift of the Zoo Society. First gorilla born at the zoo

  • 2010: Opening of the Mandrill facility and a veterinary station
  • 2011: Opening of the Sparkassen-world experience with a playground and a petting zoo
  • 2012: Opening of the spectacled bear enclosure and the Africa Lodge (formerly Forest Tavern)

After paying the entrance fee we first meet the giraffes. If you dare, you then can go inside to the ring-tailed and ruffed lemurs.  Outside again we meet the flamingo and African elephants. Then its time to visit the zoos aquarium, where the largest tank shows the life of the Rio Negro. Europes only Amazone river dolphin lives here. The house is also home to the giant otter. A small cousin we see in the Oriental small-clawed otter. Turning to the right passing the motorway bridge we see to the right the white stork. Next to it is the large Äquatorium, home to several species of monkeys as well as the gorilla and the orangutan. Then we look at the greater kudu as well as the shy bongo. At the lesser panda we turn right to see he African wild dog. Behind the following chinese garden is the dolphinarium, if you want to see a show look at the signs. A bit hidden we then meet the Amur tiger. Walking back to the bridge we meet flamingos, cranes and the rhea. On the other side of the bridge to the right we then have the spectacled bear enclosure. At the wisent we then turn to the right to look at the pheasantry, which we can walk through to get a close view on the birds. Out side again we se the porcupine and turn to the right, to see the coatie and the Northern Bald Ibis. On the right hand we see som owls and on the left the milu. Now standing in front of the Afrikanum, which is the zoos large savannah with zebras, southern white rhinos among other we follow the path to the right to see the meerkat and raccoon. After a while we then see the wolverine, the wolves and the petting zoo, which kids will love. After a while its then time to see sea lions, penguins, polar fox and the mandrill. They are followed by the seal and the reindeer. Passing the Afrikanum once more we soon meet the Koala bear, tree kangaroos and the wombat. At the milu we keep to the right to see the  Kori Bustard and a South American pampas with South American tapirs and giant anteaters. Passing the camels we reach the carnivore house, home to the mighty lion and the clouded leopard. Following are the fossa and the European wild cat, that can be found in the german forests again.
